Frequently Asked Questions

It can feel like a lot to reach out for support. I hope this page gives you a clearer sense of what working together at Amberlight Therapy might be like. If you don’t see your question here, you’re always welcome to ask.

Getting Started

Is therapy right for me?

Therapy isn’t only for crisis moments. Many people come because something feels stuck — in their relationship, in themselves, or in patterns they keep repeating. If you’re open to reflection and willing to try something different, therapy can be a meaningful place to start.

How do I get started?

Reach out through the contact form or by phone. I’ll follow up to schedule a brief consultation so we can talk about what’s bringing you in and whether we’re a good fit before scheduling your first session.

About Sessions

How long are sessions?

Session length can range from 45-60 minutes, depending on need.

How often will we meet?

Most clients begin weekly, especially early on. As things progress, some shift to every other week or monthly. We’ll figure out what makes sense together.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes — throughout Iowa via a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform. All you need is a private space and a reliable connection.

What is your cancellation policy?

Amberlight Therapy requires a 24-hour notice for non-emergency session cancelations. Failure to notify me in a timely manner will result in a $50 charge due by the next session. Further clarification on this policy can be found within the informed consent document.

Who I Work With

Do you work with children or adolescents?

No. Amberlight serves adults, couples, and adult families only. I’m happy to provide referrals for minors.

For couples therapy, do both people have to come to every session?

For couples therapy, yes — the relationship is the client. For adult family therapy, structure may vary.

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP)

What is Equine Assisted Psychotherapy?

EAP is experiential therapy that takes place on the ground with horses — no riding involved. Horses are remarkably attuned to human emotion and offer a kind of feedback that’s difficult to access in a traditional office setting.

Where do equine sessions take place?

Dusty Boots Barn in Bevington, IA

Do I need experience with horses?

No. Sessions are ground-based and focus on the therapeutic relationship, not horsemanship.

Is EAP covered by insurance?

Amberlight accepts Wellmark BCBS and Wellpoint/Amerigroup (Iowa Medicaid) for therapy services. Individual and family therapy sessions held at Dusty Boots Barn — including sessions that incorporate equine-assisted approaches — may be covered by your insurance plan. Contact your insurance provider to verify your specific mental health benefits before scheduling.

Insurance & Fees

What insurance do you accept?

Amberlight accepts Wellmark BCBS and Wellpoint/Amerigroup (Iowa Medicaid) beginning January 2027.

What if my insurance isn’t accepted?

Private pay rates are available. See the Fees & Insurance page or contact me directly.

What is a Good Faith Estimate?

Under the No Surprises Act, un-insured and self-pay clients have the right to a written estimate of expected costs before services begin. See the Good Faith Estimate page for details.

Parking & Office Location

Is parking available?

Because Amberlight Therapy is located downtown, parking is limited to meters or parking ramps.

Street Meters

Limited street parking is available by meter. The pay meters run Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Rates range from $0.25 to $1.25 per hour. I highly recommend that you download the ParkDSM app ahead of time, but you can also pay with card at the in-person kiosk.

Parking Ramps

While there are several nearby ramps, the 3rd & Court ramp makes for an easy walk to the office.

Where is your office located within 309 Court Ave?

When you arrive to the building, it will look like you are entering Court Avenue Brewery, but there is a lobby inside with stairs and elevators. You can take either to the second floor reception of Court Ave Business Suites (CABS), which is located to the right when you get off the elevator or to the top of the stairs. From there, I will come greet you and bring you the rest of the way to my office.
